Dr. Tom McGowan, the Board Chairman of Colegio Kids, maintains a blog about his work as an educational missionary in the Dominican Republic. Here is his introduction to that blog:
Some years ago, I decided that my retirement must include some “giving back” for the many blessings I’ve received in my lifetime. In 2015, I accompanied Bob and Ellen Snow, retired missionaries to the Dominican Republic, on a “field trip” to Santo Domingo; I was dazzled repeatedly by the joy in worship and the emphasis that the Episcopal Diocese places on public service, particularly the civic education of young people (there are 28 schools linked to parishes around the country). Recent mandates from the national government to improve the quality of education that all children receive have placed the Diocesan colegios (private schools) at a crossroads; the Diocese has moved forward with efforts to establish professional development programs for its teachers as well as a common approach to curriculum and the use of instructional best practices. These initiatives are what I was trained to do and spent 40 years doing. My new “career” as an appointed missionary was soon launched, with duties as an assessor (consultant) to the Junta de Educacion Diocesana (Diocesan School Board). This blog is a record of my work in the schools of the Episcopal Diocese of the Dominican Republic. I welcome your comments and prayerful support; you can contact me at [[email protected]].
